·Subject matter it is about the troops trying to get into Damascus but they could not so they forfeited with the loss and came home


 

·Perspective the western perspective because they are writing to the Germans

 

·Purpose the purpose was to make the German people look at the crusades in a good light so that they would still support them

 

 

The Second Crusade was the second major crusade launched from Europe as Catholic Holy War against Islam. The Second Crusade was started in response to the fall of the County of Edessa the previous year to the forces of Zengi. 

 

The extract is from a letter, written by Pope Urban II to his followers in Bologna, on the 19th September 1096. It is one of four written by Pope Urban II while the First Crusade was being prepared and repeats some of the decisions of the Council of Clermont in November 1095.
